Two Travellers to a River

Two Travellers to a River is dedicated to the late Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, who once said: “If I write love poems, I resist the conditions that don't allow me to write love poems.” Palestinian actress Manal Khader recites excerpts from two of Mahmoud Darwish’s poems, reflecting on how things could have been.

Embracing love as a form of resistance, for Mahmoud Darwish, the river is the place of connection, where love is exchanged and affirmed or perhaps, also, forgotten. He writes, “So we have to be worthy, this evening, of ourselves, and of a river that runs along beside us, and that we flow into as it flows into us. The fragility of freedom echoes the frail bonds of connection that we seek and sometimes hold and other times lose like water seeping from our outstretched palms.”
